How to Get an Oklahoma Motorcycle Driver’s License

To legally ride a motorcycle in Oklahoma, you need a motorcycle license or permit. Your first step will be to apply for a motorbike license at any Department of Public Safety exam office in Oklahoma.

In Oklahoma, you must be at least 16 years old to get a motorcycle license. However, if you’re under 16, you may apply for a permit. This permit can be upgraded to a license once the applicant is old enough and passes the required tests.

Potential motorcyclists must pass several tests to apply for a license or motorbike permit. The first test is a practical test where applicants must demonstrate their ability to control the motorbike. Then, they will need to pass a vision test, followed by a written test, covering road signs and laws. A practice test can be found on the DMV website here.

Motorcycle License Endorsement

To be licensed to operate a motorcycle or motor-driven cycle in Oklahoma, you need to have an “L” endorsement on your current Oklahoma Driver’s License. If you do not have a current Oklahoma Driver’s License, you can apply for a Motorcycle Permit before receiving a motorcycle-only restricted license.

Who is Eligible for a Motorcycle Permit

In the state of Oklahoma, you are eligible for a motorcycle permit if:

  • You are over 14 years old but under 18 years old
  • You are over 18 years old, but desire to receive a motorcycle permit for additional practice

Once you’ve decided you’d like to get your motorcycle permit, you will first need to complete an approved Motorcycle Safety Foundation course. This will give you an ‘L’ endorsement when you upload your completed certificate here. Afterward, you can head to the DMV to get your permit. You will need to bring the following:

  • Primary proof of identity using either of these documents
  • Social security number (no physical card required)
  • Valid proof of motorcycle liability insurance

Motorcycle Endorsements for Age 16+

One of the simplest paths toward getting your motorcycle endorsement in Oklahoma is by completing a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course. A safety course offers riders several advantages:

  • You can skip the written and driving tests at the DMV
  • Some facilities may provide you with a motorcycle to complete the course, so you will not need to own a motorcycle to get a license
  • You’ll be learning with a professional instructor
  • Many insurance companies offer discounts for riders who

Riding Without a License

Oklahoma has strict penalties if you’re caught riding your motorcycle without a license. In most cases, you will be subject to a fine of no less than $50 and no more than $300. Oklahoma authorities reserve the right to imprison you for up to 30 days if you refuse to pay the fine or if you have been charged with the same offense before.

It is important to note that if you’re from another state and have been issued a motorcycle license from that state, you can legally ride your motorcycle in Oklahoma. If you’ve found yourself in a motorcycle accident without a license, it will most likely impact the amount of compensation you can receive.
